Jazz Baroque began as a project when the founding members of GMG Trio ―jazz guitarist and composer Tilemachos Moussas, jazz vocalist Nassia Gofa and musical-saw soloist Nikos Giousef― were joined by mezzo soprano Theodora Baka & the extraordinary musicians Alexander Trampas on double bass and Panos Iliopoulos on harpsichord and piano, in order to blaze new musical trails, fusing jazz with Renaissance and Baroque music. On the surface, early music and jazz don't appear to have so much in common; but in fact, the two share a deep kinship: the spirit of freedom and improvisation. Using a jazz idiom as a vehicle, "Jazz Baroque" take us on a trip back to the music of the Renaissance and the Baroque, offering a subversive concept, where the basso continuo of Claudio Monteverdi, Henry Purcell and John Dowland is turned into walking bass, the musical saw is interchanged with soprano vocals, harpsichord and electric guitar are having a dialogue, and improvisation comes to the forefront. While there have been many crossover arrangements of Baroque pieces in a Jazz setting, "Jazz Baroque" are making the familiar new, and the new strangely familiar: it is as if they give us a new set of ears with which to enjoy a remarkable project, beautifully performed and brilliantly conceived.
